FAQ's

FAQ's - General

How do I choose the right martial arts facility?

Firstly - don't decide anything until you have actually seen a training session! Basing a decision on cost alone, and over a phone call or email is not the way to do it.
Secondly - we would suggest checking the following before parting with your hard earned money:
What is the instructor's background? How far back can it be traced? Any certificates confirming their dan grades?
Who did they learn from? (Lineage is very important in martial arts).
What qualifications do they have?
How much teaching experience do they have? Can you see evidence of respect and discipline in the class and is it a professional instructor/student relationship?
Are the students encouraged to do well?
Do you feel you could have open discussions with the instructor easily?
If you consider the above you'll appreciate that cost should not be the main reason for your final decision.

Why TCTKD?

We know you have lots of options available and we believe every martial art has something to offer. So we can only speak for ourselves. Firstly, we are not a club but a school - this is because we are a learning centre. Secondly, our experience is huge - over 30 years - from ages 4 to 61. Thirdly, our chief instructor is an ex-national triple gold medallist - he knows about winning mindsets and maximising student potential. Then there is the part about dedication - if you're serious about learning, we're serious about teaching - very serious. Finally, we take the time to explain in plain language the way to do a technique scientifically - as the Taekwon-Do founder stipulated. You will learn about correct breathing, posture and meditation as well as how to develop speed and power using his sinewave theory. You (or your child) will not be forced to train twice weekly - that will be up to you. However, you should bear in mind that progress through gradings will take at least twice as long if you choose to train once a week. And on the subject of gradings, we are a professionally run group so you'll find us in formal blazer/tie when these happen.

It's just about fighting isn't it?

Actually, no. What you're paying for is the development of character-building skills like teamwork, celebrating success, learning to deal with failure (life isn't perfect), working hard, helping others, leadership, empathy, resilience and so much more. Your return on investment will be huge, helping to reduce stress levels and improve mental strength. The self-defence aspect is just that - an aspect of studying this fantastic system of developing the mind, body and spirit.

FAQ's - Costs

Do you offer pay as you go training?

Unfortunately, at the present time we don't. Our syllabus requires regular attendance in order to progress. We have found students to be more committed when pay monthly is the only option. Also, please bear in mind that training facilities must be paid for even when a student is absent.

How much do you charge?

This is dependant on how often you'll be using our service and which syllabus you'll be looking to use. Our fees start at either £29 or £44/mth. Other start-up costs you will incur include an annual membership licence fee, as well as a uniform. (You do not need a uniform for the first month). Grading fees are payable when students wish to apply for promotion to the next belt. Finally, sparring requires full protective gear. We are happy to discuss this with you at the appropriate time.

When comparing costs it's worth looking at your fees as an investment in you or your child and asking yourself "How much is my own or my child's health and well-being worth? Both physically and mentally?"

Then compare training costs with everyday things you don't think twice about - coffee and a slice of cake, supermarket treats, hair and beauty treatments (men included!), eating out, fashion - the list goes on!

Remember - becoming proficient in this activity could not only help you to live longer - it will help you improve confidence, lower stress levels, and ultimately improve your chances of defending yourself.

Research tells us we are broadly in line with swimming and dance/stage school fees. Yet which of these would you use to protect yourself or help a friend/relative/someone in danger?

How do I pay?

Payments are done via standing order on the 1st of each month. This is to minimise wasted time collecting fees before lessons start. It also ensures payments are made on time and both parties get electronic confirmation of payments made.

Do you give discounts on training fees?

Yes, where at least two people from the same family train together we give an excellent discount. Terms apply to this offer and we are happy to discuss this with you if you feel you'd like to do this.

FAQ's - Training

Do you offer any free trials?

In short, no. However, please enquire about our introductory lessons programme. This does not require you to buy a uniform or even take up syllabus lessons until you are ready. We offer this promotional programme for up to 8 weeks to help you make up your mind. All you do is pay £5 for our exercise-only class for up to 2 weeks. After that you must become a school member by paying for a membership licence. However, once you've joined you can still continue paying £5 to train in the exercise-only class for the remainder of the 8 week period if you wish. At the end, (or anytime before) you are free to decide if you wish to continue.

What about uniform?

There is no need to buy one immediately unless you choose to. We recommend training in loose clothing for around the first 4 weeks. Clothing must not show offensive logos/photos/text.

I'm embarrassed about training, I'm not very fit - should I be worried?

In a word - no! We will work with you to make sure you don't overdo it. Whilst mild pain is acceptable for progress, strong or extreme pain isn't. Your fitness and flexibility will improve over time as long as you remain committed to improving. We know people have off-days which is fine. Remember, even black belts were beginners at one point. But they refused to give up! Give us your commitment to improve and we''ll support you every step of the way to help you achieve and exceed your goals.

What will I learn on the ITF programme?

Our ITF syllabus includes 4 key elements. These are patterns, breaking, sparring and theory. You must be of an acceptable standard in ALL disciplines to pass a grading. Don't worry - breaking (or destruction) is not required until your 3rd grading. You will start as a 10th kup (white belt) and progress to 1st kup (red belt with black tag/stripe). After this you will take your black belt grading. The first few gradings can generally be taken every 3-4 months. At the higher colour belt grades (blue and red) the grading times increase to 6 monthly - again these are based on someone training twice weekly. Once weekly will mean the periods will increase further. We'll show you how to develop your balance, speed, reaction-time, accuracy, flexibility and power along the way. Above all, you'll discover the amazing mental benefits this martial art brings - helping you lead a calmer, less stressful life. Although they have only recently found favour in the west, we have been using Mindfulness techniques for over 30 years.

How long does it take to get to black belt?

There is no short-cut. Realistically, we would expect someone to get to 1st Dan after around 4 years. That is based on training at least twice weekly with a minimum 75% attendance record, being at the right level technically, and not failing any gradings, which will increase the time period further. It's a long road and over 95% of people who start never make it to 1st Dan. Grit and determination will get you there, and the sense of achievement you'll feel will be huge, knowing that you are in the 5% of people who get to wear the much coveted black belt.

I've got a young child - what is your Lil Dragons programme about?

Our Lil Dragons programme is aimed at younger children (4-5 years old, sometimes a little older) to prepare them for our ITF programme. It consists of 4 belts and introduces them to basic theory, blocks, kicks, and punches. We also focus on discipline and paying attention, which are normally the two key areas that parents like us to focus on. We also discuss healthy eating, safety and danger, good and bad behaviour, anti-bullying - your child will also learn about teamwork and sharing and we'll help build their confidence. We promise they'll have some fun too! **Please bear in mind that regular attendance is imperative. If you wish for your child to progress we would suggest they do no more than one other extra-curricular activity.**

I've trained in TKD with another school - can I keep my belt?

Yes - if you can provide relevant information confirming your grade (e.g. certificates, instructor/association details) you can maintain your grade, whether that grade was obtained with an ITF or WTF (WT) club. However, you will need to learn our ITF syllabus in order to progress further. This will be much easier if your belt was gained in an ITF club. If it was gained in a WTF/WT club you may wish to start from scratch. We are happy to work with you to achieve the best outcome and consider each case individually.

Are gradings compulsory?

No. You do not have to grade. Although almost every person who joins wants to work their way through the belt system, we understand that you may not want to. On that basis you are free to train without having to grade. Following the belt syllabus, however, is beneficial because you will always have a target to aim for.
